Child Psychology
I have worked at the Children’s Hospital Westmead for over six years and I am experienced in assessing and treating a range of child and adolescent mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, OCD, self-harm and suicidal behaviours.
I am a trained family therapist and adopt a family approach in treating children. I am aware of the effect that mental health issues can have on children as well as on family life as a whole. Parents and other family members can be extremely valuable in supporting children in their journey back to health.
In this light I generally ask all family members currently living at home with the child to attend the first session. This helps the referred child to feel supported and allows for multiple perspectives on the presenting complaint. It also allows for consideration of the wellbeing of all family members, and the family as a whole.
After the initial family appointment, I typically recommend a follow-up child-only session and a parent-only session to assist in further developing a comprehensive, shared understanding of the presenting concerns. From here feedback will provided, and I will propose an initial treatment plan.
